Allowing PC gamers to play against and alongside console gamers began back in 2000. A year after its PC release, Quake III Arena launched on the Sega Dreamcast to great critical acclaim (its Metacritic score was 93% as of August 2011).
The game allowed four-player online play between the two platforms. There are still gamers who play this version of the game over a decade later, for its excellent frame rate and online play, despite there being more recent Steam and Xbox Live versions available.
