Although the likes of Time Crisis (Namco, 1995) and The Getaway (Sony, 2003) experimented with cover systems, Kill Switch was the first game to make cover-based shooting its core gameplay mechanic. Kill Switch introduced innovations such as blind firing from behind cover, and its legacy can be seen not only in games such as Gears of War (Epic, 2006) but also beyond the shooting genre in titles such as Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar, 2010) and Deus Ex: Human Revolution (Eidos, 2011).
