The history of the light gun goes back to the Seeburg Ray-O-Light in 1936, a simulated shooting gallery that was the first light-gun game. It wasn’t until 1987, and the Sega title Gangster Town, that developers shifted away from such formats to moving the player “on rails” through a set path filled with enemies. Gangster Town had players use their Sega Light Phaser to fire at gangsters, with a scrolling car chase in which they shot at enemies as they loomed into range.
