Inspired by Space Invaders (Taito, 1978) and Asteroids (Atari, 1979), American developer Eugene Jarvis is famed in the world of gaming for pioneering horizontal scrolling in the shooter genre with Defender. The title’s key innovation was a gameplay area that was wider than the width of a screen. Off-screen areas were represented in the form of a dynamic “mini-map”, indicating to players where they needed to fly their ship to defend humanity from evil aliens.
