Using data provided by NASA, EA Canada accurately mapped 300 mountains from around the world with ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model satellite imagery. Using this information, it has reproduced as many as 70 mountains across up to 13 different ranges for the sixth game in the series, also called SSX (released in 2012), including the Andes, Himalayas and Rockies. Players are even able to explore peaks in snow-capped wastelands such as Antarctica and Greenland, with bespoke terrain deformation adding ramps and half pipes to the natural terrain. EA use a tool called “Mountain Man” to apply ramps, jumps and rails to the realistic slopes. The game’s main menu presents a Google Earth-type 3D model of the Earth, which players can zoom in on to choose a range.
