A direct sequel to Battlefield 2 (EA Digital Illusions CE, 2005), Battlefield 3 is the first game in the main series to have a single-player story. Every previous Battlefield game has been solely a multiplayer experience. (The Battlefield: Bad Company spin-off series was separate, with its focus on story-driven solo campaigns.) The narrative in Battlefield 3 is set in 2014, and players adopt the role of Staff Sergeant Henry “Black” Blackburn, with most of the action taking place in the Middle East. Blackburn is in charge of a US army squad on a mission to find a soldier missing in action, while dodging the bullets of a determined insurgency.
