As well as playing a major role in creating modern MMOs, Ultima Online set a rather less happy precedent on 3 March 1998: it was sued by its players on the grounds that it didn’t live up to its promises. This revolved around publisher EA’s claim that UO could be played “24 hours a day, everyday”, when in fact its servers were down for several hours daily. The case was settled, with each side paying their own fees.
