Released on 16 May 2011, independent PC title Terraria sold 200,000 copies in its first week, making it the fastest-selling 2D open-world adventure game to date. Positioned as a 2D alternative to blockbuilder game Minecraft (Mojang, 2009), but with exploration elements akin to the Metroid series,
Terraria sold 50,000 copies on its first day, with a peak of 17,000 users simultaneously online. The game outsold higher-profile titles such as The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (CD Projekt RED, 2011) and Portal 2 (Valve, 2011) to top the chart on download service Steam during its launch week. Terraria also achieved an impressive Metacritic average of 83%.
