Games involving feats of Herculean athleticism go back a long way, but Olympic Gold for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive was the first to do so with the blessing of the International Olympic Committee. Olympic Gold was the official videogame of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and featured three difficulty levels for seven sports – the 100 metres, diving, swimming, hammer throw, hurdles, pole vault and archery. The gameplay owes a debt to classics such as Track & Field (Konami, 1983), with button-mashing mastery required to conquer many of the events.
