The first augmented reality (AR) game to break free from the constraints of desktop computers and mainframes was the experimental shooter ARQuake, developed by the Wearable Computer Lab at the University of South Australia. The game used a semi-transparent display to overlay virtual items and enemies from the massively successful Quake (id Software, 1996) on to the player’s current position in the real world. With the necessary hardware alone costing over $10,000 (£5,100), ARQuake has never been made available to consumers.
