The first puzzle game to use interchangeable 2D and 3D perspectives was Crush for Sony’s PlayStation Portable. The game required players to navigate an insomniac’s dreamscapes by “crushing” them back and forth between 3D environments and 2D platforming planes, effectively squishing enemies and creating new paths. Although the game’s crushing mechanic was compared to that of Super Paper Mario (Intelligent Systems, 2007), Zoë Mode’s executive producer Paul Mottram claimed Crush’s core idea was one the studio had been tinkering around with since 2002.
