The largest chemistry lesson in multiple venues involved 4,207 participants across 13 venues in an event organised by The Ministry of Science and Technology (Israel) in Cities across Israel on 22 September 2011.
The experiment was conducted as follows: Upon entrance to the site, each participant will receive a kit that includes a small glass with Sodium silicate (also known as liquid glass) in it and a small bag Calcium salt, Copper (II) chloride, Iron (III) chloride. The participants will first watch a short film clip in which the experiment is explained using visuals from the actual experiment on Columbia, and includes also a short message from Rona, Ilan Ramon's widow. When the sign will be given for participants to perform the experiment, they will mix all the ingredients into the glass – an action which takes about 2 minutes to perform. Trained guides will guide the participants throughout the experiment. After mixing the various components, the participants will watch how the three crystals grows together into one solution creating chemical reaction in the colors white and blue (the colors of the Israeli flag), with gold surrounding them.
