In the modern era, major videogames are usually created with a view to becoming long-standing franchises rather than one-offs. In fact, there is only one game in the overall list of top 100 critically-acclaimed videogames that isn’t part of a series. Graphic adventure Grim Fandango (Lucasarts, 1998) has an average review score of 93.03% according to Gamerankings.com and holds the rather dubious honour of ‘most critically acclaimed one-off in gaming’.
