The Honda FCX, introduced in North America and Japan in October 2002, was the first hydrogen-powered production car – and the first to be sold to an individual customer, in July 2005.
The FCX’s ‘fuel cell’ uses hydrogen to create electricity (which charges a battery that, in turn, powers the electric motor that drives the wheels). The original box-shaped FCX car was replaced in 2008 by a sleek, medium-sized sedan called the FCX Clarity, which had a more advanced fuel cell and a greater driving range on a single tank of hydrogen. As of March 2011, there were 26 FCX Clarity sedans on lease in North America and 12 on lease in Japan.
