More than 20,000 books were left behind in a 12-month period. An entire suitcase of Mills & Boon romances was found in the Leeds Travelodge.
A Travelodge spokeswoman said: "This year more thrillers have been left behind in Travelodge hotels than ever before. Celebrity biographies have maintained their position within the forgotten books index but we have seen a big decline in 'chick-lit' books being left behind by customers. It seems Britons want a thrilling mystery in their lives." Also on the hotel chain's list of the most mysterious objects left behind during 2010 were keys to a Rolls-Royce Phantom car in Chester, Cheshire, a Hermes handbag worth £8,000 in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, and a 4ft (1.2m) tall yam (vegetable) in Cambridge. A suitcase of royal memorabilia dating back to Victorian times was found at the hotel's Gatwick Airport branch and a Bengal kitten called Tiger at London Docklands. All items left behind at Travelodge hotels that are not claimed within three months are donated to Cancer Research UK charity shops across the UK.
