The world’s longest community of living trees are the forests in the Andean mountains of southern Chile and Argentina that are composed of Patagonian cypresses (Fitzroya cupressoides). These communities have an average age of 2,500 years. Moreover, a specimen of Patagonian cypress in Los Alerces National Park in Neuquen, Argentina, also presently holds the record of being South America’s tallest individual tree, standing 57 m, with an age of around 2,600 years. In the past, it is possible that there were even taller specimens, of 60-70 m in height.
