It wasn’t until Stockholm 1912 that the Games could finally boast athletes from every continent (excluding Antarctica). In making its Olympic debut, Japan became the first Asian nation to compete in the Games, represented in athletics by Mishima Yahiko, a sprinter, and Kanakuri Shizo, a marathon runner; neither athlete won a medal.
