With the Japanese release of Square Enix’s Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age on 29 July 2017 and the first in the franchise having emerged for the Famicom/NES in May 1986, the Dragon Quest series had been running for 31 years. The franchise’s popularity in its home country was reflected by sales in Japan of Dragon Quest XI, initially released for PS4 and 3DS, of around two million in the first few days.
