Satellite with the longest life in service (non-powered)
- Who
- LAGEOS 1
- When
- 04 May 1976
LAGEOS 1 was launched on 4 May 1976. It was joined in orbit by its twin LAGEOS 2 on 22 October 1992. Together, these small 60-cm diameter spheres are used to provide laser ranging data by timing how long it lakes a laser beam pulse to reach the satellites and reflect off their 426 reflective corner-cubes. These satellites occupy extremely stable orbits and are likely to remain in orbit about the Earth and ''operational'' for around 8.4 million years.
