The Underground Railroad (Amazon Prime Video, 2021) has a metascore of 92 on the review aggregator Metacritic, making it the highest review-rated show of the year. The limited series, based on Colson Whitehead's novel of the same name, is a historical fantasy that premiered on Prime on 14 May 2021 and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Miniseries or Television Film.

The series is set in the 1800s and follows plantation slaves Cora and Caesar as they make a bid for freedom using a mysterious subterranean railway line, pursued by bounty hunter Ridgeway. The magical-realism show is inspired by the real "Underground Railroad" - a country-wide network of abolitionists, sympathisers, secret routes and safe houses established in the 19th century to help escaped slaves flee to free states or to Canada. It stars Thuso Mbedu as Cora, Aaron Pierre as Caesar and Joel Edgerton as Ridgeway.
