Helium 3 is an isotope of helium that is a strong candidate as fuel for nuclear fusion. It is produced by the Sun and streams off into space as part of the solar wind. Helium 3 exists only as a trace on Earth but, on the Moon, with its lack of atmosphere and magnetic field, the solar Helium 3 atoms directly strike and embed themselves into the lunar soil. The isotope was discovered on the Moon by Apollo astronauts and scientists estimate there could be 1 million tonnes of it spread across the lunar surface – enough to power the whole world’s energy needs for thousands of years.
