The eruption of the Toba supervolcano around 75,000 years ago was catastrophic for human life. The eruption ejected some 800 km³ of ash into the atmosphere, and created the largest volcanic crater on Earth. The resulting tsunamis and volcanic winter are thought to have reduced the global population of humans to as few as 10,000. The crater measures 1,775 km² (685 square miles) in area.
