The largest fine ever imposed on an individual in Grand Slam tennis is $82,500 (£53,000) given to Serena Williams (United States) for the major offence of aggravated behaviour during the 2009 US Open Semi-Final at Flushing Meadows, New York, United States, on 12 September 2009. The fine itself was imposed on 30 November 2009.
Serena Williams' verbal outburst which earned her the record fine occurred after a line judge called for a foot-fault at a crucial point of the match. Due to a previous warning Williams was given a one point penalty for her tirade which resulted in her opponent, Kim Clijsters, being awarded the match. The previous record fine was £38,000 ($43,756) given to Jeff Tarango in 1995 at Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom.
