In April 1998 scientists announced their discovery of rotating tornado-like storms in the atmosphere of the Sun, using observations made by the SOHO satellite. Occuring mainly near to the poles of the Sun, these phenomena are around the size of Earth and the ionized gas within them moves at around 500,000 km/hr (300,000 mph).
