The rarest member of the onion genus Allium is Allium rouyi, a Spanish species numbering less than 300 specimens fragmented among five subpopulations confined within a very small area of Andalusia's Bética province. Until rediscovered during the 1990s, it had been feared extinct, is ranked as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, and is threatened by habitat destruction and grazing.
