On 15 July 2007, Lewis Pugh (UK) became the first person to undertake a long-distance swim across the Geographic North Pole. His 1-kilometre (0.6-mile) swim, undertaken in water temperatures of between minus 1.7°C and 0°C (29-32°F) and without the aid of a wet suit, took 18 minutes 50 seconds to complete.
Pugh took on the swim to raise awareness around climate change and the extensive melting of Arctic sea ice in recent history.
In 2013, Pugh was made UN Patron of the Oceans.
