In terms of international box-office revenue, James Cameron (USA) is the most successful 3D filmmaker of all time, despite only having made one film in the medium thus far. As of January 2013, Avatar (2009) remains the highest-grossing film ever, having taken a total of $2,782,275,172 (£1,719,446,056) at the worldwide box office.
Having made three high-profile films in 3D between 2004 and 2009, Robert Zemeckis is perhaps the most consistent champion of big-budget 3D filmmaking, but as none of his 3D projects have grossed enough to compete with the unprecedented box-office successes of recent years, he is currently 8th on an overall list of highest-grossing 3D directors, with a total 3D gross of $829,194,708 (£512,442,330).
