In 1995, scientists at the US Naval Research Laboratory discovered an area of luminous sea in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Somalia using satellite images. The patch of water measured more than 250 km (155 miles) long and had an area of around 14,000 km² (5,400 miles²). Bioluminescent bacteria are believe to have been responsible for the water's striking appearance.
