- Who
- Surtsey
- When
- 14 November 1963
The island of Surtsey, off the south coast of Iceland, formed on 14 November 1963 when the new land being created by an undersea volcano finally breached the surface of the ocean. The volcanic activity, which had begun 130 m (426 ft) below the surface, lasted until 5 June 1967. By this time Surtsey had grown to around 2.7 km² (1 mile²) in area. Since then the island has been gradually shrinking due to erosion.
