The hungriest species of bear is the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). In order to survive, every day it must eat as much as 38 per cent of its own weight in bamboo shoots or as much as 15 per cent of its own weight in bamboo leaves and stems. This is because it can only digest up to 21 per cent of all the bamboo that it consumes, which means that it even needs to eat throughout the winter rather than hibernating like other bears, and spends up to 15 hours per day eating, thus consuming more food per body weight than any other bear species.
