The largest zoological family of mammals is Muridae. This rodent family houses the true mice and rats, as well as the gerbils and jirds, and comprises 834 species of the total 2,550 known rodents (circa 33%), according to data published in the Journal of Mammalogy on 1 February 2018. They are distributed naturally throughout Eurasia, Africa and Australia, but introduced worldwide by humans.
Muridae are part of the largest order of mammals on Earth, the rodents (Rodentia), accounting for 39% of all mammal species (approximately 2,250 of 6,500 species).
