The world’s bulkiest species of starfish is Thromidia catalai, native to the western Pacific. On 14 September 1969, a specimen of this hefty five-armed species was caught off Ilot Amédée, New Caledonia, and weighed an estimated 6 kg (13 lb 3 oz). It was later deposited at New Caledonia’s Nouméa Aquarium.
