Hottest fish eyes
- Who
- swordfish (Xiphias gladius)
- What
- 28 degree(s) Celsius
- When
- 01 January 0001
The hottest eyes recorded for any fish are those of the swordfish (Xiphias gladius). Even when swimming in almost freezing water, the swordfish is able to utilise special organs near its eyes to heat up its eyes to temperatures as much as 28°C. The reason why it does this is that it is able to see moving prey, such as squid, up to 12 times faster with hot eyes than with cold eyes.
