The first stealth game to adopt a 3D environment was Tenchu, released in Japan only on 26 February 1998 and preceding the better-known Metal Gear Solid by seven months. The game was remixed with additional content as well as significant plot and character upgrades for its Western release, as Tenchu: Stealth Assassins.
