To celebrate the birth and life of writer Ernest Hemingway (aka Papa, USA, 1899–1961), Sloppy Joe's bar in Key West, Florida, USA, organizes an annual "Papa Look-Alike Contest", with 2022 marking the 42nd anniversary of the event. The contest is divided into heats, with participants expected to look and dress like Hemingway as he did in a famous portrait shot in 1957 by the Amenian photographer Yousuf Karsh – essentially a white beard and thick-knit fisherman's turtleneck jumper.
Hemingway was a patron of Sloppy Joe's in the 1930s (it opened in 1933). On 1 November 2006, the venue was added to the US National Register of Historic Places. In the first event, in 1981, a total of just 36 men took part; in 2022, there were 124 entrants, with Jon Auvil of Dade City, Florida, USA, taking first place. Sadly, the 2020 competition was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
