The most frequently challenged book in the US library system is Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe. The American Library Association recorded 106 attempts to have it removed from US public library collections in 2023.

The American Library Association has been tracking formal challenges to books in public library collections since 1990. The number of unique books that have been objected to at least once has been steadily rising over the last few years, climbing from a few hundred in the late 2010s to 4,240 in 2023. These challenges include requests from library patrons and parents, political pressure from elected officials and activist groups, and policy changes from educational administrators.

Editions of Guinness World Records have been placed on the banned books list in several districts in the US, most notably in Escambia County, Florida, where four recent copies have been added to the Board of Education's 1,600-strong blacklist.
