The fastest half marathon wearing armour is 3 hr 26 min 44 sec, and was achieved by Rob Holmes (UK) in Walton on Thames, Surrey, UK, on 13 March 2020.
Rob has previously run marathons in the iconic Rhino costume to raise money for Save the Rhino. A colleague once mentioned in passing that her son was involved with historical battle re-enactments and one thing led to another, eventually resulting in Rob taking on this challenge!
He trained for this attempt for around six months by running with various weighted packs and vests, as well as short runs in the full armour before one practice half-marathon run in Brighton, UK.
He says the armour was not only heavy and painful to run in but also extremely loud. The biggest challenge on the day was to keep moving and not give up. After the race it took around one week to recover from the muscle soreness and a further few weeks for all the cuts and bruises to heal.
On becoming a Guinness World Records title holder, Rob said it would "be amazing to hold a framed certificate and complete a dream from way back when I was a kid, flicking through my Guinness World Records annual."
