Bluesnarfing is the act of stealing data such as telephone numbers and addresses from insecure Bluetooth devices. In 2004, mobile security expert John Hering (USA) used an antenna attached to a gun-like stock to bluesnarf a mobile phone from a distance of 1.7 km (1.1 miles). As part of the experiment, he used “exploits” (mobile-phone hacks) to attack the phone, steal its contact list and send sms messages from it. The attack was performed on one of the phones owned by the wireless research and development company that Hering worked for, in order to demonstrate vulnerabilities in Bluetooth devices at the time.
