As the number of digital visual effects shots (VFX shots) featured in blockbuster movies continues to multiply, India’s film industry has raced ahead of Hollywood in recent years, with effects supervisors for S.S. Rajamouli’s medieval fantasy epic Baahubali: The Beginning (India, 2015) confirming that the film contains around 4,500 separate VFX shots, as created by over 600 VFX staff working for 16 different effects studios across five countries.
By comparison, The Avengers: Age of Ultron (USA, 2015) is the first Hollywood film to feature over 3,000 VFX shots – a record that Bollywood broke in 2011, when publicity for Anubhav Sinha’s Ra.One (India, 2011) boasted that the film contained over 3,500 VFX shots.
