The Strait of Magellan is a natural passage of water separating mainland South America from Tierra del Fuego. Measuring around 530 km (329 miles) long and between 4 and 24 km (2.4 and 14.9 miles) wide, it has historically been the most important shipping route that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Despite the importance of the man-made Panama Canal, the Strait of Magellan is still used extensively today by ships rounding South America.
