Of the few hundred billion galaxies in the Universe spiral galaxes like our own Milky Way, make up roughly 77% of them. They are characterised by spiral arms wound around a brighter core with around half of all spirals also containing a bar across their centres. Spiral galaxies contain up to several hundred million stars, along with gas and dust.
