The weight of ice pressing down on the land in south east Alaska during the Little Ice Age, roughly between 1300 and 1650, caused it to be squashed downwards. When the ice retreated the land that was covered started to rebound that is, spring back upwards. Global Positioning System measurements reveal that the area is rising at a rate of 32 mm (1.25 in) every year.
