A serac - a large block or column of ice, often the size of a house - crumbled and fell from an ice field near the summit, killing at least one climber and cutting the lines of a group of climbers descending the dangerous peak.
Further ice falls claimed more lives during the night, while others died trying to recover the dead. The 11 hailed from Serbia, Pakistan, Norway, South Korea, Nepal, Ireland and France.
