The South African is the smallest of the six floral kingdoms (Boreal, Neotropical, Paleotropical, South African, Australian and Antarctic).
It also has the highest concentration of plant species, with over 9,000 species, 6,200 of which are endemic (that is, occur nowhere else), in an area of just 460,000 km² (17,750 miles²). This equates to 1,300 species per 10,000 km² (3,861 miles²). By comparison, the rainforests of South America contain a concentration of only 400 plant species per 10,000 km² (3,861 miles²).
