The world’s largest orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) sanctuary is the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, based in the Malaysian state of Sabah, in northern Borneo. Since it opened in 1964, it has rehabilitated over 100 rescued orphaned orang utans back into the wild. In addition to its primary function of orang utan rehabilitation, the centre is also actively involved in public education on conservation, as well as research and assistance in relation to other endangered species, including captive breeding programmes. The centre currently employs more than 37 staff, including a Wildlife Officer, a vet, wildlife rangers, and general workers, and has become one of the leading tourist attractions in Sabah.
