The competition is held annually in Sonkajärvi, Finland, and as a prize, the winners receive the weight of the female partner (which must be more than 49 kg/108 lb) in beer.
The unusual competition, which involves a man completing a 253.5-m-long (832-ft) obstacle course while bearing a female partner (the pair don't actually have to be married), began in Sonkajärvi, Finland, in 1992. Similar contests have since spawned in several countries around the world, but it is particularly popular in the Nordic and Baltic region. In Finnish, the sport is known as eukonkanto and in Estonian naisekandmine.
The most wins of the Wife Carrying World Championships by a woman is six, by Miettinen's former partner, Kristiina Haapanen.
