- SS Suevic
- What
- 524 people
- When
- 17 March 1907
On 17 March 1907, the 12,000 tonne liner SS Suevic, belonging to the White Star Line (UK), struck the rocks of the Maenheere Reef, of the Lizard Point, southwest Cornwall in the United Kingdom, while experiencing dense fog and bad weather. She was sailing from Australia to Southampton, UK and was carrying 524 passengers and crew. Four wooden lifeboats from villages around the Lizard put to sea and, in the following 16 hours, the 60 lifeboat men rescued all the men, women, children and crew. While there have been larger rescues at sea, this is believed to be the largest by lifeboat alone.
