Brackish water has a salinity between that of fresh water and sea water. The Baltic Sea, in northern Europe, with a surface area of around 377,000 km2 is the largest area of brackish water in the world. Its salinity ranges from around 0.6% to around 1.5%. For comparison sea water contains around 3.5% salt. The low salinity of the Baltic is due to the mixing of sea water with the fresh water runoff from its surrounding countries.
