The last known and datable hieroglyphs - the "sacred carved letters" engraved on monuments by ancient Egyptians to communicate their religious beliefs - are those at Hadrian's Gate in the Temple of Philae, on an island in the Nile, Egypt, dating back to 24 August AD 394. The monuments of the island of Philae were relocated to the nearby island of Agilika between 1972 and 1980, following the completion of the High Dam at Aswan in 1971.
