The Need For Speed was first created in 1994 by EA Canada, who was initially known as Distinctive Software (a.k.a. Unlimited Software) until 1991, when it was bought by Electronic Arts (EA). The studio handled the series for the next 11 years. In 2002, Vancouver-based Black Box Games was contracted to develop Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, a company that was subsequently bought by Electronic Arts to become EA Black Box. In addition, spin-off titles Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed and Need For Speed: V-Rally were developed by Eden Studios, and ports of the games have been handled, variously, by EA Seattle, EA Redwood Shores, EA Mobile, EA UK and Exient Entertainment. In 2015, Need for Speed No Limits published for mobile platforms and was developed by Firemonkeys Studios. In total, 20 different studios have worked across the series, across various sequels and platform ports, with other notable studios including Criterion Games.
